Geology and Structure of Beta Regio, Venus' Results from Arecibo Radar Imaging
نویسندگان
چکیده
Arecibo radar images of a portion of the equatorial region of Venus provide the first high resolution (1.5to 2.0kin) synoptic coverage of Beta Regio. Within this area, tessera, complex deformed terrain, is identified as a major 40' geologic unit with the largest region corresponding to a plateau on the east flank of the highland. Three models are proposed to explain the origin and evolution of Beta Regio and are identified as Mantle Plume/Passive Crust, Mantle Plume/Active Crust, and Mantle Plume/Crustal Spreading. The Mantle Plume/Passive Crust model appears to be the most consistent with the geology in this region and suggests that a 30 o plume disrupts a preexisting region of tessera.

Styles of volcanism on venus: new arecibo high resolution radar data.
Arecibo high-resolution (1.5 to 2 km) radar data of Venus for the area extending from Beta Regio to western Eisila Regio provide strong evidence that the mountains in Beta and Eisila Regiones and plains in and adjacent to Guinevere Planitia are of volcanic origin. Recognized styles of volcanism include large volcanic edifices on the Beta and Eisila rises related to regional structural trends, p...
متن کاملVenus: volcanism and rift formation in Beta regio.
A new high-resolution radar image of Beta Regio, a Venus highland area, confirms the presence of a major tectonic rift system and associated volcanic activity. The lack of identifiable impact craters, together with the apparent superposition of the Theia Mons volcanic structure on the rift system, suggest that at least some of the volcanic activity occurred in relatively recent geologic time. T...

Radar exploration of the Solar System changed dramatically during and beyond the period of theMagellan mission to Venus. These changes included an expansion of the community familiar with microwave data, and the forging of a strong connection with polarimetric scattering models developed through terrestrial field measurements and airborne radar studies. During the period, advances in computing ...
متن کاملImpact crater related surficial deposits on Venus: Multipolarization radar observations with Arecibo
[1] The distribution of surficial deposits in the vicinity of impact craters on Venus was studied using measurements of the polarization properties of the reflected radar wave. Subsurface scattering of an incident circularly polarized radar signal results in a linearly polarized component in the radar echo due to the differing transmission coefficients at a smooth (at wavelength scales) atmosph...
متن کاملVolcanic deposits in shield fields and highland regions on Venus: Surface properties from radar polarimetry
[1] We compare Arecibo dual-polarization radar image data for Venus to Magellan images and emissivity data to investigate the physical properties of volcanic deposits. Radar waves can easily penetrate smooth mantling layers such as ash, aeolian and craterderived deposits. If a circularly polarized radar wave refracts into a surface that is smooth at wavelength scales, the vertical component of ...
